IT’S SO CONFUSING, DO I NEED TO TAKE SUPPLEMENTS?

With so many ads and articles on vitamins and supplements, it’s impossible for most people to know what to believe. Here’s what I have told every patient of mine for the past 20 years. Take at least a pharmaceutical (chelated) multivitamin with minerals, extra vitamin D3 and fish/omega 3 oil. Why? Because we’re not getting these vital nutrients in our foods.

Scores of varying studies have shown 40-80 percent reduction in depression and depression related symptoms when omega oils are optimized. But why wait for depression. Even for healthy patients, prevention is the key to wellness, and I advise omega 3 oil (usually fish oil) with adult dosing being 2-4 grams daily. Forchildren, adolescents around 30mg/kg of body weight in kilogrms. Understand that the omega fats make up a very important part of cell membranes. Without them, cells don’t function properly. It’s not a stretch to imagine that if brain cells lack adequate omega 3, they won’t work as well and mood difficulties such as depression, anxiety and really any neurologic symptoms are more likely.

Everybody needs a GOOD, PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE multivitamin and mineral. Modern farming has stripped the soils of so many nutrients that the apple of today has 40% +/- of the nutrients that the apple of 30 years ago did. All of the organs require so many nutrients for normal function that even the AMA has endorsed this recommendation.

Finally, Vitamin D3. There are exceptions of course where too much Vitamin D3 can worsen your health, and your doctor is your best resource to ask if you have a condition that would not be compatible with vitamin D3 supplementation. Most adults need 4000-5000 units daily unless they are exposed to the sun with bare skin long enough in the day to keep their blood levels near 70-100.

Just following those simple 3 supplements will provide a huge nutritional difference for most people. Enjoy.
